‘The Downside of Up’ – A Short FEASTA Course

A short FEASTA course with David Korowicz on how economic growth eats itself, the environment, and makes society poorer. Explores the idea and operation of the global economy in the context of the wider eco-system in which it is situated. The continuing desire for economic growth, by its nature, will require ever more inputs of materials and energy. At the same time, it generates more and more waste such as greenhouse gasses. Is such an economy sustainable? Does it make us more content? Indeed, what is an economy for? Will nature force a change? Are other forms of money creation possible?

About the author

Caroline Whyte collaborated with Richard Douthwaite on an online update of his book Short Circuit: Strengthening Local Economies in an Unstable World in 2002-3 and went on to study ecological economics at Mälardalen University in Sweden in 2005-6, writing a masters thesis on the relationship between central banking and sustainability. She compiled the conclusion for Feasta's 2011 book Fleeing Vesuvius and was a contributor to the Feasta Climate Group's book Sharing for Survival in 2012. She lives in central France, from where she edits the Feasta website.

Feasta is badly in need of funding at present. Early in 2013 we will lose a sizable proportion of our core funding owing to the winding down of a trust fund that has been supporting Feasta for many years.
